Anionic polymerizations of 2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethoxy(trialkyl)silanes and 2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethoxy(t-butoxydimethyl)silane were investigated with oligo(α-methylstyryl)dilithium or -dipotassium as initiator in tetrahydrofuran at −78°C. These monomers readily polymerized to form ‘living polymers’. Subsequent deprotection of the silyl groups from the resulting polymers gave poly[2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethanol]s of the desired molecular weights with narrow molecular weight distributions ().

A process, requiring minimal skills, for applying a protective acrylic coating, with or without extending the tips, to the human fingernail as afforded by (1) clearing and roughening the surface of the nail, (2) applying a layer of liquid acrylic monomer, (3) applying a powdered polymethacrylate ester to the wetted nail surface, (4) removing loose powder and smoothing the nail surface, (5) brushing on, as one would with nail polish, a second layer of liquid acrylic monomers and, after curing, (6) finishing the nail in the conventional manner.

A composition for adhering to human nails includes a mixture of a cyanoacrylate compound and/or graphite fibers. Such composition can take the form of either an artificial nail extender or a nail coating. The composition for forming an artificial nail includes graphite fibers, a cyanoacrylate, and a hardening accelerator containing a mixture of trichlorotrifluoroethane and N,N-dimethyl-P-toluidine. The accelerator is adapted to be sprayed onto a base material containing the graphite fibers and cyanoacrylate in the form of a mist.

An adhesive composition characterized in that the composition is prepared by subjecting finely divided hydrophobic silica surface-treated with hexamethyldisilazane to a heat treatment under a reduced pressure, subsequently treating the silica with an acid gas, and admixing the resulting silica with an alpha-cyanoacrylate.

This invention relates to precaution against a hazard in the use of adhesive compositions based on cyanoacrylate monomers. It relates to a protective composition for the skin (especially the hands) of a person working with a cyanoacrylate adhesive or "superglue", and to a method using the composition, for protecting such a person's skin.

The lap shear strengths of stell joints bonded with ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate adhesive containing various amounts of acetic acid have been determined, and an optimum adhesion promoting effect was found at an acetic acid content of 0.25% by weight. Further tests showed that adhesion promotion with acetic acid was dependent on the nature and surface treatment of various metal adherends, with selectivity being shown towards steel, stainless steel and duraluminium.

A method for applying a polymeric resist coating of very high molecular weight to a suitable substrate without the necessity of elaborate purification steps and for ensuring adequate coverage of raised regions in three-dimensionally patterned substrates. The method comprises exposing the substrate to be coated to the vapor of an anionically polymerizable monomer of the formula: CHR=CXY where X and Y are strong electron withdrawing groups R si H or, provided that X and Y are both -CN,C1-C4 alkyl for sufficient time to deposit a polymerizable coating thereon.

This invention relates to stabilized adhesives, to which silyl esters are added for stabilization.
